TIE & DYE

Tie and dye work, known as bandhel or bandhni is popular all over Rajasthan in the form of colourful odhnis and safaas. Saffron, red, green, yellow, pink, maroon-the vibrant colours and patterns of bandhel change from region to region. It is considered auspicious in all sections of society, for all important landmarks, especially marriages. Also available on more sophisticated materials (silks, chiffons, georgettes) for the urbanised rich clientele.

The finest bandhel work and the most imaginative patterns with birds, animal and human motifs come from Sikar district. It is known as Sikri bandhel. Jodhpur is known for its phaganiyas or shades of yellow.

Another variation of tie and dye technique is the lahariya-in diagonal stripes of colours, resembling waves. Lahariya can be single or multi-coloured.

Checks formed by intersecting diagonal stripes at right angles is mothra. Jaipur is renowned for its mothra and lahariya.

Safaas and odhnis of lahariya and mothra are worn during the monsoons. Traditionally, these are dyed in running colours which can be washed off and re-dyed in yellows for the Holi festival.
