Book Description

About The Book

The Authentic Yoga is a must-read for those who wish to understand the true purpose and nature of Yoga. It is thought to be P.Y. Deshpande's most outstanding work, offering the reader a profound commentary on the universal principles of Yoga as presented to the world by the great sage Patanjali. P.Y. explains the nature of a meditative mind, the effect of meditation on consciousness, how to realize our human potential, and what happens when we succumb to likes and dislikes. His approach is purely scientific, and his findings are the result of direct insight through yogic practice.

About the Author

Purushottam Yeshwant Deshpande (1899-1986) was a major literary presence in India, who brought an entirely new approach to Marathi literature during the period from 1925 to 1945. Then, after meeting J. Krishnamurthy in 1961, he expanded this vision and literary originality into the spiritual field. His later books include interpretations of the Bhagavad Gita, the discourses of the Buddha, and this book on Patanjali's Yoga Sutras. These books were written in English, establishing him internationally as an authority. He was an original thinker who shunned the limelight, preferring the simple life of a seeker of the Truth.

Foreword

Today, if you go into any bookstore or search on any online book platform, you will find a multitude of books on the topic of Yoga, but there will only be a handful that can offer the profound depth of understanding that we find in this rare treasure by Purushottam Yeshwant Deshpande (1899-1986). It is a must read for any serious student of Yoga and spirituality.

What is so special about this book? P.Y. Deshpande was a major literary presence in the Marathi language of India, especially during the period between 1925 and 1945. An original thinker with a global vision, he brought an entirely new approach to literature, especially the Marathi Novel. And after turning to spirituality and meeting J. Krishnamurthy in 1961, he expanded this vision and literary originality into a whole new dimension. His later books, including interpretations of the Bhagavad Gita, the discourses of the Buddha, and Patanjali's Yoga Sutras (The Authentic Yoga), were written in English and brought him international recognition. Known as an idealist and a revolutionary, he was not content to copy and imitate the age-old interpretations of the ancient texts, but chose his own original path, and for that he was often criticized during his lifetime.

Introduction

This book makes a fresh inquiry into and a new approach to the understanding of Yoga as it is expounded in Patanjali's Yoga Sutras. An explanation is needed for adding one more book to the vast literature available on the subject all over the world, in many languages.
