Essence of Art and Culture (In Memory of Prof. Kalyan Kumar Ganguli)

Preface It is a matter of great sorrow that this volume as it was planned initially could not see the light to the day during the life time of Prof. Kalyan K. Ganguli who had left for his heavenly abode on 7th November 1997. The felicitation volume is now thus published in his memory. This inordinate delay is due to various reasons beyond our control but certainly a lapse on the part of organizers who have been entrusted with the work. We therefore apologize for this delay in publishing the volume. Inconvenience caused to all is sincerely regretted.

The volume in its present form has been divided into six sections dealing with-History. Archacology, Art & Architecture, Religion and Iconography etc. There are in all forty-eight articles contributed by eminent scholars in the respective fields. It is hoped that the contents of the volume will certainly make a significant contribution in the field of Indian Art and Cultural studies which has been the life mission of Prof Ganguli. It is pertinent to note that the contribution of Prof. Ganguli in the study of Art and Culture is insurmountable. A select list of Prof. Ganguli's writtings" prepared by Shri Dhrubabrata Mukherjee is an evidence of his varried interest in the field. His deep understanding, masterly writings and eloquent teachings in enhancing the ideals of Indian culture are testimony of Prof. Ganguli's ever presence amongst his students and art cannoi rewers. He has been their friend, philosopher and guide in all sphere of life and studies and therefore, this is a befitting homage to this great doyen of Indian cultural studies, Though a delayed one. We beg his pardon and also offer our sincere apology once again to all specially to the readers who are anxiously awaiting for the publication.

We have tried our best to make the publication a standard one, as it should be. However, in spite of our best efforts many lacunae may be detected for which we crave the indulgence of the readers. We take this oportunity to offer our sincere thanks to all specially the Contributors who patiently awaited for the printing of this book. Our thanks are also due to Dr. Agam Prasad of M/S. Agam Kala Prakashan, Delhi who has taken the burden of this production in praiseworthy way.
