Book Description
Morarji Desai, India's first non-Congress Prime Minister was a statesman who strode tall and erect on the vast stage of India's political life for the major part of the 99 years that he lived. The only recipient of the highest civilian honour from both India and Pakistan - Bharat Ratna and Nishan-e Pakistan - he strove during his tenure in office to bring about lasting peace between these two countries. The book captures the quintessence of this great leader through the various phases of his long and distinguished career. It provides an in-depth analysis through the different stages of his professional life - as a government officer, as a freedom fighter, as the 'iron' Chief Minister of the erstwhile State of Bombay, as Union Finance Minister, Deputy Prime Minister, Opposition Leader and Prime Minister. It brings to light his abilities as an able administrator, as also his principled stance on issues of national interest, even at a personal cost.
Arvindar Singh is a columnist and entrepreneur. His works include Myths and Realities of Security and Public Affairs (an anthology) and What A Life! A Kaleidoscope of Rajinder Puri's Cartoons (co-authored with Partha Chatterjee). He regularly writes book reviews for Penguin Random House Publishers. He has written widely on security matters. In 2003 he wrote a monograph on Field Marshal S.H.F.J Manekshaw for the United Services Institution of India, New Delhi. He has also been associated with Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and writes frequently, as a freelancer, on current topics of national interest.
