Book Description
Peripheral vestibulopathies most often leave behind residual vestibular damage. In acute phase, when a patient has severe symptoms, anti-vertigo drugs are of definite value. However, over a period of time compensatory mechanism in the Central Nervous System allow the patient to come back to a relatively stable equilibrium / function. As a matter of fact, prolonged use of anti-vertigo drugs is likely to hamper these compensatory mechanisms of the central nervous system.
The main stay of treatment for patients with residual vestibular damage is adaptation exercises. Perhaps the most well known are set of exercises described by Cawthorne & Cooksey. Certain traditional forms of exercises such as "Yogic Asanas" as well as "Tai Chi" have been suggested as means of aiding habituation, adaptation and central compensation. These have been explained in detail in this book.
