Book Description
This volume contains a rendering in English of over a hundred poems chosen from the four collections of Iqbal's poetry written in Urdu, which include religious, lyrical, satirical and other themes. There is also the comparative original text of the poems for ready reference.
The work was originally undertaken by the translator when he lived in the Punjab, Iqbal's native province.
Born in Manchester, V G Kiernan was educated at Trinity College Cambridge, where after taking the History Tripos, he researched modern diplomatic history.
He spent eight years in India before partition, radio, broadcasting during the war and teaching and studying Indian history and politics, In Lahore he met Faiz Ahmad Faiz and other Urdu writers, and began translations of poems by Iqbal. Professor of History at the University of Edinburgh for several years.
He is also the author of various books, including work on India, Asian and European history
