Book Description
The present work, dealing with Rock-cut Model Shrines in Early Medieval Indian Art is the outcome of my research in the Department of Sculpture and Art History of the Tamil University when Prof. Raju Kalidos was the Dean of the Faculty of Arts. The work was completed during 1995-96 and has been rewritten and updated. Several new illustrations have been added as a result of the fieldwork undertaken every time I was in India. The field is not new for me because for the past several years (as in 1996), I was trained in art historical research of the cave temples of India and the wood carvings of Tamilnadu under the initiation and inspiration of my father. It was indeed an enrapturing experience when in 1991; I had the opportunity to attend the Indian History Congress at Delhi and on the way visited the Gupta cave temples at Udayagiri (Madhya Pradesh).
