Book Description

Preface
The material which forms the present work originally emanated as lectures at the Post-Graduate Department of Philosophy of the Mysore University, and elsewhere. Through, the discussion has been topical in All character, and aims to project a certain point of view of Advaita and tries to expound or clarify issues relevant to the topic. Incidental references to other Vedanta’s and schools of philosophy are made, but the main purpose has been the explication of Advaita for Advaita. Generally, in all the discussions, the basic ontological stand is taken. It appears to the author that all problems arise only when this stand is forgotten, either in the exposition of the system or in the critical estimate of it. Advaita is taken here as pointing to the 'infinite' nature of the Real, and if it is termed, as is commonly done, 'Atman' or 'Brahman,' implies a comprehensive vision of a non sensous immediate character, which, unconditionally takes us to the realms beyond the 'finite' or ordinary life and logic. If the truth of Atman or Brahman is to be grasped intuitively and described, perhaps, it may be said thus: 'it is a way of saying, and not actually the thing said.' This is because it eludes a definition and fixation. Nothing confines it, and everything is confined by it. Its nature or dimension is so infinite, that it fills all and overflows all. It is the exclusion of all exclusions.
