Avastha:

1. The specific order of life as the body ages; infancy, childhood, youth, and so on.

2. Condition, state of being.

3. Effect of time; according to Yaska, a fifth-century Sanskrit scholar, there are six transformational states of being - birth, existence, growth, maturing, decline, and extinction.

Stated in the Yogashastra (of Patanjali) are five states of being: ignorance, egotism, passion, hate, and attachment.

According to the Sankhya school of thought, there are three kinds of being: not arrived, manifested, and enlightened.
