Yet this disregarded the Father of Indian Cinema died in penury. The Government of India, however, appreciated his monumental work and instituted an award in his birth (1970) to be presented to an artist who makes an extensive and notable contribution to the world of Indian cinema. It is deemed to be the supreme honour in the world of cinema in India.
