Foreword

Interest in hair loss and hair care originated around 250 years ago. Later in 1902 this branch of hair disorder became known as trichology, and the institute of trichologist was founded in London.

Trichology is regarded as an orthodox paramedical study or a specialist branch of Dermatology. Trichologist are able to give advice on diagnosis and treatment of wide range of hair loss, hair conditions and scalp problems, such as alopecia areata, alopecia totalis, diffuse hair loss and scalp problems such as scalp eczema, psoriasis, seborrhoea, scalp itching, hair splitting and damage. In this book Dr Shivakumar has tried to include topics related to almost all the conditions mentioned above with their general management and homoeopathic treatment.

The chapter evaluation of hair falling and management deals with the common conditions which lead to hair falling and the nutrients that promotes hair growth. Split ends of hair are a very common problem women always complain. There is a separate chapter for this, which include the management and treatment of this disorder.

I hope this book will pave the foundation stone for research in trichology and homoeopathy. I take this opportunity to congratulate the research work done by Dr Shivakumar to establish the role of homoeopathy in trichology. With much proud and happiness I forward this book to homoeopathic fraternity in general and to those who are interested in further research in trichology and homoeopathy.

Preface

A complete handbook of trichology and homoeopathy by Dr Shivakumar BHMS, MD (Hom) is the first reliable and authentic book in homoeopathy that covers the major hair disorders with general and homoeopathic management.

Currently trichology is a fast developing but expensive field, but the fact is that majority of the hair disorders can be easily and permanently managed with homoeopathy and there is no recurring expenditure.

This book covers anatomy, physiology and biochemistry of hair, investigations, diagnosis of different types of alopecia and effective management of dandruff, premature greyness, hirsutism, and evaluation of hair fall.

There are interesting sections like, cosmetic tips, latest developments in the field of trichology, syndromes that include hair abnormalities, interpretation of findings in alopecia and differential diagnosis of alopecia by investigations.

He also incorporated findings of "A study on alopecia aerata and its Homoeopathic management" which was conducted at Govt. Homoeopathic Medical College Calicut during his post- graduation.

Dr Shivakumar tried his level best to include detailed homoeopathic therapeutics, miasmatic approach and a concise repertory abstract of various disorders related to hair that will be a great help and support to practitioners of homoeopathy.

Introduction

‘Trichology’ is the study of hair and its disorders. In human beings, hair has an important cosmetic function, the other functions include protection, aids to appreciate superficial sensations and as outlet for secretion of sebum. Excessive hair loss or excessive hair growth in certain areas of the body may lead to mental agony and distress. Normal human beings have approximately one million hairs of these 1,00,000 is present in the scalp.

I am very glad to present this work ie. "Hair Care and Homoeopathy" before the Homeopathic fraternity. The need of a book on Trichology had arisen in my mind during the study of ‘Alopecia Areata’ as a part of my dissertation work in Post-graduation. When I was referring many standard books of dermatology for literature review, I was not satisfied with the information which I have got about hair and its disorders. At that time, I thought it would be better to have a handbook on trichology which contains all the information about hair i.e. anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology of all the diseases of hair with homoeopathic therapeutics, advanced investigations, and cosmetics in trichology.

In modern medicine, trichology is included under the subject of Dermatology and the literature about hair and its disorders are scattered here and there. In Homoeopathic literature also trichology is a new subject. Much advancement is taking place in trichology, but our fellow homeopaths are unfortunately not aware of these developments. To prepare this work, I have gone through the major standard dermatology literature and all the modern medical and general websites to collect vast literature about hair and its disorders. 10 yrs of experience in homoeopathy has led me to complete this work.

In this book I have explained in detail about hair anatomy (including micro anatomy), physiology, biochemistry, pathology of different disorders of hair, with its general management and homoeopathic therapeutics. Miasmatic interpretation about different types of hair disorders are also explained in well manner.

The literature which is available in Materia Medica about hair disorders is also presented under different topics. Different homoeopathic repertories contain various rubrics regarding hair. In this book I have placed all the rubrics about hair given in the standard homoeopathic repertories at one place for easy reference in clinics.

In this work I have also presented advanced clinical investigations to arrive at the accurate diagnosis and follow up of the patients by assessment of improvement. Importance of nutrition in hair care and some cosmetic tips to have beautiful hair is also well explained. Comprising of all these things, this work would be useful for students, teachers, physicians, research scholars, medical professionals and trichologists.
