Book Description

About The Book

Unnava Lakshmi Narayana (1877-1958) was one of the foremost among the Andhra literati who played a key role in our struggle for Independence. He responded to the rousing call of the Mahatma by renouncing his profession as a barrister. In 1921 he went to jail fighting against the alien ruler for imposing an unjust and oppressive levy. Malapalli, written in jail, has been acclaimed as the first novel of epic magnitude in Telugu literature.

Unnava championed the cause of the depressed and the downtrodden, stood up to fight for women's education and ceaselessly worked to enthuse the less privileged classes. His writings in manifold literary forms briefly discussed in this monograph stand testimony to the recognition he deserved and gained as a maker of Indian literature.
