Book Description

About the Book
Indian Tradition approves a holistic approach towards the happiness of human beings. In general, happiness is considered as a state of mind. Impressive interpretations about happiness are given in Vedic and Sanskrit texts. Here the soul is recognized as being of higher significance as compared to the body and mind; but plenty of references are also available where the importance of body is highlighted for spiritual matters. A human's health with proper upkeep and maintenance is regarded instrumental in propelling towards the higher end - that of enriching the soul. Profound research supported with analytical thinking is required to understand the concepts of ancient Indian traditional thinkers.

This volume comprises forty four selected papers which were presented at the Ninth India Conference of WAVES held at Jagadguru Ramanandacharya Rajasthan Sanskrit University Jaipur on the theme `Health and Happiness in Indian Tradition' Bharatiya Parampara me Svasthya evam Sukha). Foreword
It gives me immense pleasure to write a Foreword to the publication of papers of the seminar "Health and Happiness in Indian Perspective", conducted by "Wider Association for Vedic Studies" (WAVES) in collaboration with Jagadguru Ramanandacharya Rajasthan Sanskrit University, Jaipur. The seminar was organised on 16th, 17th and 18th December 2005, at the new campus of the Sanskrit University, Jaipur. It was the first seminar organised in the University's new campus, which was built by the blessings of His Holiness Shri Shri Shri Narayanadas Maharaj, the saint of Triveni dham, near Jaipur. It was indeed a great privilege for the then newly established University to conduct such a seminar due to which it acquired international fame. Great scholars like Prof. Ramkaran Sharma, Prof. Dayanand Bhargava participated and presented papers of utmost importance and value. Though the decision to organise the seminar in collaboration with Sanskrit University was taken up by my predecessor, it materialised only after the University was shifted to its new campus during my tenure. It was my fortune to be the Vice-chancellor of the University at that time. I sincerely thank the President and Secretary of WAVES for giving an opportunity to the University to conduct the seminar.

I appreciate the undeterred efforts of the secretary of WAVES Mrs. Shashi Tiwari, with which the seminar was conducted successfully. She took pains in contacting the officials of the University as well as the participants for the smooth conduct of the seminar.

This publication will certainly be well received by the scholars and researchers because of its literary value, both in India and abroad.

I congratulate Mrs. Shashi Tiwari for her endeavour to publish the papers and also for the President's Certificate of Honour, which she really deserves.
