Medieval Indian Literature in four volumes is the first important attempt to bring before readers the major works, authors and significant trends of the period.
This volume contains selections from Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Kashmiri and Konkani. The selections. from Gujarati reveals the co-existence of Hindu mythology and Jain ideology. Bhakti literature reached new heights in this period. Folk dramas like bhavai along with ballads also flourished.
No other literature, except perhaps Sanskrit, has received as much active collaborative contribution of writers in other languages as Hindi. Surdas, Tulsidas, Mirabai, Vidyapati, Namdev, Guru Nanak, etc. are examples. Also included are Prithviraj Rathod, Kutuban, Dadu Dayal, Maluk Das and Matiram.
Dr K Ayyappa Paniker (1930-2006), a major modern Indian poet and Malayalam writer, is the Chief Editor of this anthology. A pioneer of modern poetry in Malayalam, Paniker obtained his M A, Ph D degrees from Indiana University and did post-doctoral research at Yale and Harvard. He has taught in various colleges in Kerala and at Indiana University. He was Professor of English at Kerala University till his retirement in 1990. His major works include three volumes of Poems, two volumes of Essays and one volume of Translations of poetry. Besides these he has rendered in Malayalam a volume of Cuban poetry, Mayakovsky's poems and Raja Rao's Cat and Shakespeare. He has authored and edited several books and anthologies in English. He is a recipient of the Sahitya Akademi and Kerala Sahitya Akademi Awards for poetry and criticism, SPCS Award, Bhilwara Award and Kabir Samman.
