Preface Towards the end of 1969, Anthropological Survey of India took up a long term and broad based research project, Chattisgarh Area Study, through its Central Regional Central, Nagpur. At the title of the project indicates, its aim was to study specific social, cultural, linguistic economic, ecological, ethnic and religious characteristic features of Chhatisgarh which would make it a distinct culture area. The project intended to record the changes in different aspects of life which are bound to occur in course of time due to modernization, industrialization, urbanization, spread of education, increase in the means of communication, state sponsored development schemes and some other factors. Through this project it was also expected to collect information about interethnic regional and local hierarchy, social mobility movements, continuity and change in traditional leadership and authority structure, inter-ethnic relationship, at least, on local level, conflict and coopration in various fields, integrative modern and traditional institutions, economy and market etc. Emphasis was laid on the study of such matter which would make the region a culture area.
