Foreword
Kerala Lalitha Kala Akademi had decided to organise various programmes during the death centenary year (2005-2006) of Raja Ravi Varma. The first programme in the series was a memorial talk by eminent art historian Prof.Ratan Parimoo, who has carried out extensive research on the art and times of Raja Ravi Varma. The lecture was held on 2nd October 2005 at the Durbar Hall Art centre, Ernakulam. The present publication is a slightly expanded version of the talk. Coincidently this publication marks the finale of the centenary commemoration.

We hope that the publication would benefit the artists and connoisseurs alike.
