Book Description
Foreword
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. “ .... My Lord! Relieve my mind. And ease my task for me; And loose a knot from my tongue. That they may understand my saying”.
(Qur’an: 20 : 25-28).
Al-Qur’an, the holy book of Islam, is the last revealed message of God to mankind through His final messenger Muhammad (may Allah’s peace be upon him), the Prophet of Islam. We Muslims believe that Islam is the perfect religion and its book, the Qur’ an, is a complete code for human life. The Qur’ an contains a universal message for the whole of mankind without any limitations of time and space. It imparts basic guidance to the humanity in all spheres of life - individual, social, economic, political, moral, spiritual, etc. The Qur’ an is an Ocean of knowledge which deals with thousands of subjects, many of which have not yet been explored by man. It is a unique book in the world and it discusses a variety of subjects in its own majestic style.
“A Code of the Teachings of Al-Qur’an” is an attempt to codify the verses of the book of Islam on more than three hundred important subjects of human interest for facility of reference. The verses of the Qur’an pertaining to these subjects have been collected, arranged and compiled under appropriate headings and sub-headings. Today’s burning topics of discussion like justice, law, economic system, political system, status of woman etc. have found special place in this book. In the Explanatory Notes, I have mostly quoted the Traditions of Prophet Muhammad (May Allah’s peace be upon him) and the opinions of the eminent scholars of Islam. Thus you get the verses of the Qur’an, the Ahadith of the Prophet and the Comments of the great scholars about a particular subject of your choice collected at one place.
The translation of the Holy Qur’an which has been depended upon is the world famous English translation known as “The Meaning of the Glorious Qur’an” b Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall. For the Hadith I have particularly depended on Mishkat-ul-Masabih rendered into English by Maulana Fazlul Karim under the name of “Al-Hadis” and also on some other compilations of hadith literature.
This study is divided into twenty Chapters which have been further divided o sections and clauses, each one dealing with an independent subject or with me aspect of a main subject. The verses of the Qur’an have been arranged into graphs which have been numbered. Reference of the verses has been provided e end of each para, citing surah number, surah name and verse number, e.g., 2 Al-Baqarah : 255. Subjects listed in the Contents have also been arranged in the alphabetical order in the Index given at the end of the book.
I hope by the Grace of God this compilation work which is based on thorough research and intensive study of the Qur’an and the Hadith, would prove to be one of the pioneers of its kind in the English language. If it helps the reader even a little in his comprehension of the Qur’an’s teachings, I would feel that my humble attempt has been successful. Any criticism or appreciation of this work would be welcome.
In the end, I pray to Allah, “ ..... My Lord! Increase me in knowledge”.
(Qur’an 20: 114).
