Foreword
Since 1941 I have been associated with regional and sub regional studies in various aspects of archaeology. For I believe these alone will lead to more secure, reliable knowledge of our past. Following this lead, first Gujarat, then Maharashtra, and other linguistic regions were taken up for a detailed investigation. In such a study, Andhra, Tamilnadu, and Eastern Karnataka were found to be particularly rich. In Andhra though some work had been done in the last century, and even recently, parts of Nellore District still remained unexplored. Hence my former pupil, and now Reader in Andhra University Dr. Thimma Reddy advised his pupil V. Sudarsen to undertake an investigation of this region.

In this detailed investigation, Dr. V. Sudarsen had adopted all the latest scientific techniques, so that the result has been a first class work on "the Geomorphology and Pre-history of South India".

Preface
Specific area studies have come to occupy a prominent position in prehistory. It is quite natural in any academic discipline that in the early periods of its development the studies are directed towards an understanding of the general frameworks and then to transcend down, in later periods, to the specifics. Pre historic archaeology is no exception. A few decades back many studies were launched to understand the general picture of pre history in relatively large areas like the Peninsular India, Central India, North-Western India etc. Only recently the trend has shifted towards specific areas. This is obviously a natural course of historical development of this discipline. The specific area studies have some in-built advantages. They provide an opportunity to understand the prehistoric archaeology much better. Not only that, but they provide also solutions to the problems specific to that area. The specific area studies also provide an opportunity to probe into factors like the relationship between the environment and man, the process of human addictiveness, effects of culture contract etc.
