Introduction
The term 'Silappadikaram' (pronounced 'cilappadikaram') means the story of the anklet. The epic is so named because the story centres round the anklet of Kannaki, the heroine. The story is told in thirty chapters, preceded by a prologue.

Tamil literature consists of three branches - iyal (literary Tamil), isai (music) and natakam (drama/dance). 'Silappadikaram' is a poetical work but it also contains many songs and dances. A few passages also find a place in the epic. Thus the epic is an unique repository of all the three branches of Tamil literature.
