Yet this is no simple treasure hunting manual. The magician is promised the power to subjugate all the infernal forces – quite a formidable boast. We find many other elements of cunning craft in these pages including the toad bone, black cat bone, horse secrets and traditional spells for good and ill. The black hen and main de gloire are present and there is a notable use of an unusual form of the magic mirror.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt is a fascinating collection of miscellany which though seeming late, cut-up and corrupt has benefited from a fresh translation to be revealed as a text in and of itself.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn contrast, the \u003cem\u003eEnchiridion of Pope Leo III\u003c\/em\u003e is an early grimoire and a work of nominally Christian magic. Legend suggests that it was presented by Pope Leo III to Charlemagne and was responsible for his worldly success. A suitably disputed date of 1523 is given to its production. The \u003cem\u003eEnchiridion\u003c\/em\u003e is referred to repeatedly in the \u003cem\u003eBlack Dragon\u003c\/em\u003e and elsewhere in the grimoire tradition where the penitential psalms are required. It is important for us to understand the mindset of the \u003cem\u003eEnchiridion\u003c\/em\u003e if we are to understand the grimoires. The text was much in vogue in the court of Louis XIV and the circle of Madame de Montespan in the affair of the poisons. It continues to circulate in the French speaking world today, which speaks of its enduring virtue. Through the use of talismans, psalms, orisons and efficacious charms the reader is able to triumph over a multitude of ills.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is the magic of the Old Religion of Europe, that is, Catholicism. So much for known bibliography; nevertheless, the lessons to be learned from textual comparisons have yet to percolate out to any significant degree. The changes in the spirit order – and additions to the list – are fairly familiar subjects, but other major textual alterations require understanding.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAmong other elements that require examination – or even simply awareness – is what I call ‘the Long Text group’, five entries in the original spirit catalogue of far greater length than the others. (See: Paimon, Bileth, Asmoday, Belial, and Gaap). These, in my opinion, are among the most underappreciated resources we have for understanding the previous history of the catalogue and its original form. They also include some textual difficulties, possibly the result of deliberate tampering, which the editor(s) of the \u003cem\u003eGoetia\u003c\/em\u003e detected successfully, but compensated for inadequately.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor these and a myriad other reasons, an affordable, unlimited edition of the text is a necessity and a boon for the present community. Limited editions of Scot, in whole or in part, come and go.
