This book traces the evolution of population policies, both implicit and explicit, ever since India became free in 1947. Ashish Bose (1930-2014), Ph.D. retired as Head of the Population Research Centre, Institute of Economic Growth (IEG), Delhi. He also served Honorary (Emeritus) Professor at IEG. In 1990, he was awarded the prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru Fellowship. He wrote and edited over 20 books including From Population to People. In 1986 he was a member of the National Commission on Urbanisation (NCU) appointed by the late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. As the Chairman of the Drafting Committee of NCU, he produced a series of reports on urbanisation. He was Chairman of the Expert Group for analysing 2001 ensus data on religion, appointed by the National Commission for Minorities.
