About the Book The stories in this collexction have their sources from various ethinic groups living in different regions of Nepal. They were collected and translated into English by Karunakar Vaidya, while trying to retain their originality.

Preface Folk tales, myths and legends, just as folk-songs and folk dances, are the priceless possession of each and every nation of the world, and are preserved in all possible ways by all the leading nations of the world. In many countries there are societies and associations whose main goal is the collection and compilation of folklores.

The folk tales, myths and legends of Nepal stand out as something very mysterious and original in their own way just as the Greek and Roman myths, Grimms Fairy Tales, Tales from Arabian Nights, etc. The fascinating parallels that are generally found in the stories told by various races show that there is a basic kinship between nations despite superficial diversities. For this reason folklores play an important part in the attempt to bring together all the nations of the world and to promote mutual understanding, universal sympathy and world unity.

As Nepal takes her rightful place in the community of nations, the folk-songs, folk-dances and folklores, which are essential ingredients of the far-famed Nepalese arts and culture are gradually coming into the lime light.

Nepal, which is rightly called as the 'Land of Temples' and 'Kingdom of Gode', is also 'the Land of Myths, Legends and Folklores'. No less interesting and instructive than the folk-dances and folk-songs are the beautiful folklores of Nepal, which have hitherto remained unexplored.
