Book Description

Preface

Indian Karnatic Music is a fine art, which is held in a very high esteem by the whole world and has to be appreciated as long as the world exists. This fine art of Kamatic music is highly enjoyable, pleasant and a classic one. When the Karnatic music is developing now in a mighty way and growing in a fast manner, it has become highly essential for the students learning Music, to know all the Theories and the intricacies of Karnatic Music. Our forefathers and great musicians and composers have written lots of books for us. to know about all the aspects of Karnatic music. Their intention was that the future generations should get maximum benefits from those wonderful creations.

As desired and blessed by my Guru, Veena Vidhushi, Smt. R. Jayalakshmi, I have been conducting classes in both Vocal and Veena, on my Guru's Pani for the past 37 years. To enable the students appearing for the Indian Music, Lower and Higher Grade Government examinations, I have written two separate Theory Books, in the year 2004 and 2005 in Tamil with Theory, Practical songs with Notations and Model Question papers, which are being found very useful by the students. Now to comply with the wishes expressed by many students to publish this book in English also, I have brought out the English edition for the Lower Grade exam. As per the prescribed Syllabus, describing the Ragas, Tal, History of some great Vakkeyakaras etc, and lots of information on Indian Kamnatic Music have been elaborated in this book.

Swaravalies, Gitas, Swarajaties, Jatiswara, Varnas, Krities Tevaram, Tiruppugazh and Divya nama Kirtana and Model Question Papers are also brought out. Even those students, who are not appearing for the examinations, by reading this book can know these Sangita Lakshanas and will be very much benefited. My sincere acknowledgements to Kalaimamani Prof. Sri. R. V. Krishnan and Sangit Rasika Sri. E.Seshadri for their valuable guidance.

With the idea of contributing my humble service, for the cause of Karnatic music and for its further development. I pray the great Almighty and seek the blessings of the great elder musicians and bow down to them, for their whole hearted co-operation and blessings.

Foreword

The knowledge of Music has to be well grasped. adequately chewed and effectively digested Srimathi S.Vijayalakshmi in her book, Indian Karnatic music in English has provided scope to fulfil these essentials for learning on sound lines. The author's interest and involvement in presenting the Music materials is quite admirable.

I am very much elated to find that the author has followed a gradual order in presenting the topics so as to inculcate Music awarness and interest, alertness and understanding.

The Practical part focussed upon in this book is really worthy for the candidates preparing for Music examinations at various levels.

Srimathi Vijayalakshmi has been bestowed with a fine Lakshiya skill besides a good Lakshana Gnana.

The contents in this book have been picked up from the Syllabus prescribed for Music examinations at various levels conducted by the Government and the University.

I am quite confident that this book will serve as an asset, not only to the music students, but also to the Musically inclined public.

I wish the author to continue her service in the direction of Music promotion and Propagation.
