Arthashastra literally means "the text concerned with general well being on earth". Kautilya's famous treatise of this name had a two-fold aim; first to show how a ruler should protect and enhance the well being of his territory. Second, how to acquire more territory.

The implications of this for today's statesmen, policy makers, think tanks, captains of economy, corporate professionals are obvious.

The present book is a critical step towards bringing the lessons of the Arthashastra closer to today's decision-makers. Kautilya wrote this treatise to groom a young prince for the onerous task of kingship. His teachings are still relevant for their underpinning of hard - headed logic, clear vision and result-oriented focus. They have been presented here in an elegant and appealing format for contemporary readers.

Ajjanta Chakravarty is a management consultant. Her special forte lies in the exploration of modern wisdom in ancient Indian texts. She has travelled widely and has lectured extensively in India, US, France and Poland. She writes on management issues in national newspapers. Currently, she is the Director of Centre for Cross Cultural Communications.

Anindita Chakravarty is currently a doctoral scholar at the school of Management, Syracuse University, New York State. After completing MBA from Calcutta University, she worked with ICICI Bank. Her special field of interest are strategy and market behaviour.
