Book Description

Preface

The Ududaaya Pradeep is a treatise efficiently dealing with the rules for analysis of the Vimshottari dasha. The brilliant author of this work is unknown but is most certainly a good practitioner and a teacher (Guru) of Vedic Jyotisha. The composition has been named by him as `Ududaaya Pradeep' meaning a compendium throwing light on the Nakshatra-based dasha, i.e., Vimshottari dasha of Parashara.

In the arena of Vedic Jyotisha, the classic is popularly known as laghu Parashari' amongst the Astrozens perhaps to distinguish it from the BPHS (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra) as all the prniciples are derived from the BPHS. The author himself states that this present compendium is based on his understanding of the Hora Shastra of Sage Parashara. The work beautifully reflects the excellence of the Sanskrit language also wherein an appropriate selection of words even that of the suffixes, the prefixes and the verbs have deep implied meaning.

This petite composition, confined to forty-two Shlokas only, speaks a lot in its brevity. Each verse, intelligently composed, contains rich and reliable material for dasha-interpretation, so it, for a long time, is essential to study for every student of Vedic Jyotisha.

Because of its excellence, many learned scholars could not spare themselves to speak on the classic. A large number of authentic commentaries, especially in Sanskrit language, are available where commentaries namely Udyota', Sajjan Ranjani, that of Pt. Vinayak Shastri `Vetal', Pt. Ramyatna Ojha and Vidyadhari (Hindi) by Dr. Suresh Chandra Mishra are worth to mention.

Several versified commentaries in Sanskrit are also ranked to be the independent classics like Bhavartha Ratnakara, Veda Jatakam, Jataka Chandrika and Sushloka Shatakam, etc., indicating its superlative significance in the realm of Jyotisha.

This present translation of the text and exhaustive commentary is meant for providing the essence of all the above-mentioned works to the readers in nut-shell. This will help the reader to understand the principles and their proper application to a given natal chart. So the commentary is illustrated with actual horoscopic examples.

Many quotes relevant to the context, culled from other classics, would be of interest of the readers. For sake of ease, necessary tables for calculating the balance of dasha, periods of the ADs and the PDs have also been included. I also borrowed an article on the fixation of extension of the twelve houses and preparing the Bhava-Chalit chart from the write ups of Dr. Suresh Chandra Mishra.

For interpretation of the Shlokas and preparation of this commentary, I have taken ample support from the vast work of Dr. Suresh Chandra Mishra on Vedic Jyotisha, available in the form of books, commentaries, articles, write ups and lectures. And above all, his personal guidance remained of high importance in this pursuit.

I earnestly express my deep reverence to Dr. Suresh Chandra Mishra, my father, my Mentor and consider myself blessed that his unconditional guidance is always available to me.
