Book Description

About the Book
Jayanta Bhatta occupies a unique position in the history and development of Indian Philosophy in general and Pracina Nyaya in particular. Nyayamanjari is an encyclopaedic exposition of the Pracina Nyaya. While writing this, Jayanta has taken into account all the relevant views of almost all the systems of Indian Philosophy prevalent at his time. He has presented views of his opponents so elaborately and clearly that some times it is easier to understand the opponents from Jayanta's Nyayamanjari than from the original texts of the opponents.

About the Author
Prof. V.N. Jha is director, Centre of Advanced Study in Sanskrit, University of Poona.

Preface
I have great pleasure in presenting the English Translation of the first Ahnika of Nyayamanjari of Jayanta Bhatta. Jayanta Bhatta occupies a unique position in the history and development of Indian Philosophy in general and Pracina Nyaya in particular. The author himself informs that the text was written in a cave where he was put by the King of that time. Nyayamanjari is an encyclopaedic exposition, of the Pracina Nyaya. While writing this, Jayanta has taken into account all the relevant views of almost all the systems of Indian Philosophy prevalent at his time. He has presented views of his opponent so elaborately and clearly that some times it is easier to understand the opponents from Jayanta's Nyayamanjan than from the original texts of the opponents. Jayanta, the Poet-Logician, has unique capacity of presenting clearly the issues in a very beautiful Sanskrit.

Dr. Janakivallabh Bhattacharya had translated this text into English and one part of his translation is already published. I took up the project of translating Nyayamanjari into English again because Dr. Bhattacharya's translation is based on a very corrupt Sanskrit text published by Chaw-khamba. When the Oriental Institute, Mysore, published another edition of Nyayamanjari and again when the L.D. Institute, Ahmadabad published the Nyayamanjarigranthibhaniga of Cakradharaya, I realised that a fresh attempt to translate this text into English in view ofThese new materials is an absolute necessity. I hope to present the entire Nyayamanjari in English Ahnika by Ahnika. I shall welcome all suggestions to improve upon the present translation.

I thank Dr. (Mrs.) Nirmala Kulkarni and Dr. (Mrs.) Ujjwala Panse for helping me in correcting the proofs. I also thank Indian Books Centre for having come forward to take up this project of publication of the English translation of Nyayamanjari of Jayanta Bhatta.
