Book Description

Introduction

One of my friend presented me a copy of "Art and Architecture of Cambodia" by Dr. Helen Ibbitson Jessup, a erudite scholar of Southeast Asia. I was very much impress by the book. It gave me inspiration to write the present book. Fortunately some of my students have sent me photographs of Cambodian Temples and Sculptures. Hence, I have decided to work on Cambodian Sculptures with the help of Pali-Tipitaka Sanskrit and Ancient Indian Culture. The region of South-East-Asia including Myanmar is dominated by Theravada - Buddhism of India. The rivers like Mekong and Red river have made this land fertile and prosperous. Hinduism and Buddhism have influenced these Asian Countries. It will be useful to study geographical structure of South-East Asia to understand the growth of Hinduism and Buddhism in these area. South-East Asia can be divided into two main lands, e.g. (a) At the Southern border are the regions like Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Thailand. (b) The northern side is covered by the ranges of mountains which were invaded by China and Central-Asia.These ranges of mountains, rivers along with heavy rain-fall obstructed communication between various groups of people who developed their individual cultural groups.
