Sangeeta Shastra Mala

Music has always played its part as a medium of entertainment and relaxation, as well as a spiritual outlet. Prayers In India are heard in the form of music in temples. churches. mosques, gurudwaras and all places of worship. Be it classical or folk, music is a great unifier.

In this book. I have tried to give the basics of Sangeetha Shastra. in a very simple manner. The Tala Shastra. which Is part of the music, has also been dwelt upon briefly. Apart from the details of the fundamentals of music and tuba, I have also endeavoured to explain the importance of music in dance. The contributions made by various Bhakta-s (devotees). composers and musicians, with reference to the musical and lyrical aspects in dance, are also given. with some examples. The basics are given in as simple a manner as possible. so as to make it comprehensive for absolute beginners as well as the uninitiated.

The shastra-s of music and tala are common to both Bharata Natyam and Carnatic music. Some aspects of tala like laya, kalam etc. are common not only for Bharata Natyam and Carnatic music. but also for other classical dance styles and Hindustani music.

While Section-A gives the basics of music and tala Section-B deals with the fundamental details of the synergy of dance and music. Other facets like Rasa-s. Nayika-s. Navavidha Bhakti and more are dealt with in my book titled Natya Sastra Mala.
