Book Description

Preface

Sri Aurobindo, a great philosopher - saint, a spiritual revolutionary and mystic, was also a poet of the first order. He was one of India's most extraordinary leaders. He not only: inspired the revolutionary movement in India, but also transformed the Congress from an elite to a mass organization.

Sri Aurobindo's advent on this earth has to be interpreted in a special way. His entire earthly life was one of the continuous efforts to create a congenial atmosphere and manifest the Supermind. "Since the beginning of earth history, Sri Aurobindo has always presided over the great earthly transformations, under one form or another or one name or another," says The Mother.

Sri Aurobindo's fight for India's freedom was also at beginning for the establishment of Divine Kingdom on earth. The future will hail Sri Aurobindo as an Avatar who ushered in the supramental age. He himself has stated: "I am not doing anything for myself, as I have no physical need of anything, neither of salvation, nor supermentalisation. If I am seeking for supermentalisation, it is because it is a thing that has to be done for the earth consciousness."

When Sri Aurobindo finally came to settle in Pondicherry, he not only made a direct attempt to scale supramental heights, but also bring down the supramental light, knowledge and power into the mental, physical and vital planes and effect their transformation. Sri Aurobindo may be considered as the beacon whose light still draws millions and how this political pathfinder transformed himself into a spiritual mystic with a profound universal vision still remains an unsolved puzzle.

In the early years, Sri Aurobindo passed the most impressionable part of his life under western influence, in the convent school at Darjeeling and in England. When he was twenty-one years old, he returned to India, his homeland, destined to actively take part in the fight for India's independence and to raise the awareness of his countrymen of their culture and the role of India in the world.

Sri Aurobindo took active part in the Indian freedom struggle. He was one of its prominent leaders. He also propagated a vision of an India, proud of her past and courageous enough to face the future.

Sri Aurobindo was the first politician to stand openly for complete and absolute independence. The word "Swaraj" was the aim and slogan of the Indian Nationalist Movement. Aurobindo wrote several articles strongly advocating non-co operation, settlement of disputes in law by arbitration, national education, passive resistance, boycott of foreign goods and use of "Swadeshi" goods. This programme was strictly followed by the nation.

The multi-faceted life of this great leader, philosopher, poet, teacher and mystic has been lucidly described in this short biography. This work would no doubt satisfy the reader who is curious to learn about the life, character and achievements of this extraordinary person.
