Book Description

From the Jacket:

This volume brings together the papers presented in the seminar on 'Panini and Modern Semantics' by eminent linguists, logicians and grammarian at a seminar organized by the Sahitya Akademi. The topics discussed at the seminar were of a wide range from karaka theory to the computer. Compatibility of Sanskrit and from sicio lingustics to structural grammar. Here the manifold conceptual domains of Paninian are being subjected to meaningful exploration. This collection opens up possibilities for a dialectical interaction between conventional and formal grammar and semantics.

A unique feature of the Indo-European languages is their capacity to build compounds and this tendency has developed into unusual proportions in later classical Sanskrit. The great Panini has exhaustively documented the contours of compound formation, which take into, account both syntactic and semantic issues. Some scholars demonstrate through their papers how the semantic predilection of Panini is manifest in his compound rules, as in the distribution of vocabulary into fields.

The present collection will serve as a useful guide book initiating aspiring reader into realms of Panini Semantics.
