Book Description
The present work authored by Subhash C. Kashyap, former Secretary General, Lok Sabha, discusses the theme of citizenship values under the Constitution by analysing the provisions of the Constitution. The book tries to deduce therefrom citizenship values and examining how they have been implemented so far and how they can be understood, disseminated and realised in practice in the future.
THIS MODEST STUDY on citizenship values under the Constitution was undertaken as a project of the Citizenship Development Society (CDS). When completed, the book was most appropriately published by the Publications Division, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India. It was widely welcomed.
THE CONSTITUTION THAT the Founding Fathers gave us is a secular source and rich reservoir of citizenship values. It represents a synthesis of the modern and the traditional, the old and the new. It endeavours to assimilate the experience of the American, the French and the Russian Revolutions and gives substance to the ideas and urges which moved the people of India in their struggle to gain freedom to come into their own.
To seek to found the edifice of the largest ever democracy on the basis of universal adult franchise was on the part of the architects of the Constitution an act of faith in the maturity of the people of India. It was particularly courageous in the context of the low levels of living standards and literacy.
