Text mainly deals about the poorvakarmas of panchakarma and pradhana panchakarmas in clinically effective manner. It will definitely serve the purpose of undergraduate students postgraduate scholars and practitioners of Ayurveda. It is highly useful as hand book for every clinician.

About the Author

Dr. Udaya Ganesha B. Joined for B.A.M.S. course in K.V.G. Ayurvedic Medical College and Hospital in the year 1998. He completed his graduation in the year 2004. He extended his service as a teacher of Panchakarma to the pupils from various foreign countries at Ayurvedic multispeciality Hospital, Kannur, Kerala. Later he worked as Medical Officer at Ayurvedic Hospital at Deli, kasargod (from 2004 to 2006). He joined for post Graduation in the P.G. Dept of Panchakarma at Shree D.G.M. Ayurvedic Medical college and Hospital at Gadag in the year 2006. He also pursuing his Ph.D. in the Dept. of Panchakarma at Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth. Since July 2009 onwards till date working as Assistant Professor in the Dept. of Panchakarma at Shree Jayendra Saraswathi Ayurveda College and Hospital, Chennai, Tamilnadu.

Preface

Disease are broadly divided into the types: Santarpanajanya and Apatarpanajanya vikaras. In Santarpana janya vikaras: Apatarpana line of treatment and vice versa. Santarpana also known by the name Brihmana and Apatarpana by Langhana. Shodhana and Shamana are two Kinds of Langhana therapy.

According to Vagbhata, Shodhana is expulsion of vitiated Doshas out of the body i.e, yadeerayet bahairdoshan

Sthaanaat bahirnayet urdhwa adho va mala sanchayam deha samshodhanam tat syat.....

As per Charakacharya, Panchakarmas are : Vamana, Virechana, Anuvasana, Asthapanavasti and Nasyam.

Sushuruta and Vagbhata have included Rakta mokshana in Pancha shodhanas.

Steps of Panchakarma

Poorva karma: Deepana, Pachana, Snehana and Swedana.

Pradhana karma: Vamanadi panchakarmas

Paschat karma: Peyadi samsarjana Karma/Krama.

Indication for Shodhana

Indigestion, Loss of taste (Anorerxia), Obesity, Anaemia, Heaviness, Fatigue, Erruptions, Rashes, itching, Lack of Interest, Laziness, Tiredness, Weakness, Depression, Utklishta Kapha – Pitta, Loss of sleep, Excess sleep, Drowsy, Impotent, Deterioration of Strength, colour and complexion even after intake of nourishing food.

General contra-indicaitons

Rash behaviour, Coward, Unigrateful, Unstable mind, Fickle minded, those who are rejected by king and vaidya, hatred towards king and Vaidya, Faithless in Dharma and god, person exhibiting Arishta lakshanas, loss of body parts, always doughtful, not a follower of words of Vaidya, Jealous, Depleted body parts, suffering from incurable diseases.

Benefits of Shodhana

Shodhana willeradicate the disease from its roots, there won't be any chance of recurrence, if get rid off through Shodhana. Other benefits of Shodhana are Enhanced digestive power, reduction in disease, gaining normal health, proper functioning of sense organs with its objects, body strengthened, increased virility, delayed ageing process, persons live for longer without any disease.
