The Mahabharata had been composed by the sage Ved Vyasa. The sage was looking for a good scribe to write the book. Someone suggested him to ask the son of Lord Shiva, Ganesha to do this task. He approached Ganesha and explained what he wanted him to do. Ganesha agreed to write the epic for Ved Vyasa. However, he put forth a condition. He told the sage that he would write only if he dictated the poem non-stop to him. This was a strange task and somewhat difficult to perform. But Ved Vyasa agreed saying that he would dictate to him non-stop but nothing would be written down by him without understanding what it meant. Ganesha too agreed to this condition and wrote down the Mahabharata.
