About the Author

Dr. Animesh Ray (1936-98) studied in Presidency College, Calcutta, Calcutta University Law College and London School of Economics, London. He was Chief Secretary, Government of Tripura and Additional Secretary, Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India, besides holding other important positions in public sector organisations. His books include Co-operative Farming in India; Mizoram-Dynamics of Change; Mizoram- Home of Highlanders and Maritime India-Ports and shipping.

Mizoram is a state of great natural beauty. Its lovely hills, intertwined with mighty rivers, gentle brooks and ever green forests with their lush and luxuriant growth pres ent a picture of nature with its bounty. Living in this scenic environment the Mizo people have a nature which is usually calm and quiet but when aroused could be extremely explosive. The people and their habitat have a symbiotic relationship which is evident even to a casual visitor to the land. Mizoram is now in the process of accelerated eco nomic development: A state which was troubled for more than twenty years is now an abode of peace. The Mizo people are now on the road to prosperity with a new vigour. Their enthusiasm for fast social and economic reforms has created a new ethos in Mizoram. If this enthu siasm of the Mizos is sustained it would soon emerge as a strong sentinel of the country in the north-eastern border. The author has always enjoyed writing about the Mizos and their charming land. Like his two previous books Mizoram (1972) and Mizoram -Dynamics of Change (1982), the present one is also based largely on the author's own experience. However he has also made use of the old data from some very illuminating books written by the pioneer administrators of the Mizo Hills as well as a number of records and manuscripts.
