Book Description

Preface

This book forms the third and concluding part of the Jubilee Volume.

It contains eight essays in all. Seven essays are on different philo-sophical topics contributed by distinguished scholars of Philosophy. All of them belong to a select society, as members of the Indian Institute of Philosophy, Amalner, at one time or another. Professor G. R. Malkani joined the Institute when it had just started in July 1916, and, except for a couple of years when he visited England for higher studies, has dedicat-ed his entire life with unwavering devotion to Philosophy, and is now the honoured Director of the Institute. Shri. Chandrodaya Bhattacharya has been with us for more than twelve years and is doing valuable re-search in Philosophy. Professor George B. Burch came all the way from the United States of America and stayed with us at the Institute for a few months to exchange philosophical ideas with the Members of the Institute. Professor R. Das was with us for over twenty years and has now return-ed to his home province—Bengal, as a Lecturer of Philosophy at the Calcutta University. Professor K. C. Gupta spent a few years with us before joining the Calcutta University as a Lecturer in Philosophy. Professor D. D. Vadekar was with us for about three years, and is now the Head of the Philosophy Department in the Fergusson College, Poona. And Prof. P. R. Damle, who was formerly a Senior Fellow of the Institute for a couple of years before he went to Dharwar, is now the Senior Pro-fessor of Philosophy at the Nowrosjee Wadia College, Poona.

The last essay is a review of the Textile Mill Industry in Khandesh, contributed by two very experienced officers in that field—Shri. M. M. Amin, B.A., General Manager of the New Pratap Mills, Dhulia, and Shri. V. G. Karnik, B.Sc., LL.B., Labour Welfare Officer in the same Mills.

We are very thankful to all the learned contributors for their cor-dial response to our request to send articles for this Jubilee Volume. We had also requested two other former colleagues and our esteemed friends—Professor T. R.V. Murti of Banaras and Prof. D. M. Datta of Patna to send papers for this Volume ; but they have not been able to do so, doubt-less due to other pressing commitments elsewhere.

Philosophy and Textile Mill Industry have been the two main interests of Shri. Pratap Sheth's Life. His devotion to Philosophy for over 50 years has moulded his life into an integrated whole and has given it a spiritual background, and his successful enterprise in the Textile Mill Industry has provided him with the necessary material foundation and financial support to his numerous philanthropic gifts and donations to deserving individuals, causes and Institutions.

On this happy occasion of his completing seventy-five years of age, we wish him many more happy years of Peace and Prosperity and fer-vently pray to God to confer His blessings on Shrimant Pratapsheth.

We express our appreciation of the neat printing and handsome get-up of this book, and thank Shri. P. H. Patwardhan, Manager of the Sangam Press Ltd., Poona, for his personal attention, and his colleagues, for their willing co-operation. It is a good job, well done.
