About the Book

Every one in this world longs for a long, healthy, happy and peaceful life. But it is not possible on his part to be blessed with them without knowing himself both from the biochemical and philosophical points of view. “Atmanam Viddhi' or “know thyself” is the goal of mankind. With these points in view attempts have been made in this book to show how one has to select balanced food, how they are digested, absorbed and utilized for growth and for yielding heat and energy i.e., capacity for doing work. Discussions have also been made as to how by following philosophical gospels one can have real happiness and tranquility of mind. It has been shown how one can regulate the excess secretion of a compound called 'adrenaline' a hormone, the flow of which increases during the time of fear, anger, anxiety or any other vicious state of mind to do harm to others.

Some one feels that scientists have no faith in religion or in the existence of the Almighty. But it is not true. The world famous scientist like Albert Einstein, a physicist and Nobel Laureate was a true philosopher too. He said "Science without religion is lame and religion without science is blind.” A true scientist, who succeeds in revealing truths already existing in Nature, cannot but think of a Super scientist or Super-engineer. This book will not only benefit the common man but will also be of great help to those students, who will study Biochemistry under various faculties such as science, medicine, home-science, pharmacy and veterinary sciences.

Preface

Eternal peace is the goal of mankind and everybody on earth, whether rich or poor, dark or white, aspires after a long and happy life, undisturbed by the worries and anxieties of the world. Man is the greatest of all the animated beings on earth and blessed with the finest sense of understanding the real object of discriminating between right and wrong and of selecting the path, which may lead to perpetual happiness and celestial bliss. But in spite of all these, the number of those, who really enjoy happy life in this land of living, especially in these days of modern civilization of stress and strain, can be taken as hopelessly poor.

On account of pressure of conflict of interests between man and man and between a nation and a nation, the world of today has taken a new shape. Sometimes it is noticed that as a result of supremacy of the animal instincts hidden within a person, he forgets all about the ideals of a true human being and indulges in activities centering round the various circles of self and self alone. Self help is the best help no doubt, but when this “best help” has to be rendered to one's own self at the cost of peace and happiness of another self, the dignity of the word “self help” is lost for ever and the question of achieving real peace and happiness, even for one's own self, remains hanging in the world of dreams alone.

Scientists of the modern age, who have dedicated their lives for the cause of alleviation of human sufferings by revealing various truths about the secrets of life, are at one with the philosophers and the thinkers of ancient India and have shown beyond doubt that biochemical reactions in a living being, which result into proper development and maintenance of the body and mind and which supply heat, vital energy and power of thinking etc. can, by no means, proceed on in a normal way in the system unless and until the carrier of the system cares to carry on his life in a proper and normal way. For, it has now been proved beyond all doubts that a person, who frequently gives vent to the disturbing factors of mind such as fear, anger, anxiety, jealousy, etc., can neither keep his own system in proper working condition nor can he attain peace of mind. It has been rightly said that a person, who falls a victim to any sort of mental agony or agitation of mind lives on his own flesh.

Secondly, it is also seen that many of those, who are born with silver spoons in their mouths and who have all resources for comfort and pleasure, cannot often be blessed with a healthy and sound body. Many of the so-called well-to-do persons feel it beneath their dignity to select those materials as their food, which are not purified by an up-to-date mechanical or chemical process and which are not palatable, either to the taste of tongue or to the sense of sight. It is in this way that they are deprived of the socalled impurities, which have recently been known to be substances of great potentialities charged with active vital factors for life.

Introduction

Science of life includes Physiology and Biochemistry, which deal with the various cells and tissues and the chemical reactions and mechanisms, which govern life-processes. Philosophy of life preaches gospels, which can improve the intrinsic values of life by way of inculcating fellow-feeling, kindness, sympathy, good-will and other qualities, which cannot only endear oneself to others but which can give real peace of mind.

The term ‘Biochemistry owes its origin to the Greek words “bios” and “chymos,” which mean life and essence or juice respectively. Thus biochemistry literally means chemistry of life. This discipline of science got its initial impetus from organic chemistry. But now it has got a multi-disciplined approach arising out of the principles of Physiology, biology and chemistry.

During the first quarter of the 20th Century, the chemists termed this branch of science as “Physiological Chemistry” or “Biological Chemistry” whereas the physiologists got satisfaction by calling this new branch of science as “Chemical Physiology."

Enormous progress has been made during the past 50 years or so to unravel various kinds of newer truths and mechanisms, which govern the life processes and it has sprung out to be an entirely new discipline called “Biochemistry” or “Science of Life.'

Biochemistry is not only an important subject-matter to be taught in the faculties of Science and Medicine but also in those of Home Science, Pharmacy, Veterinary Sciences, etc.

Various principles and mechanisms revealed through the strenuous research efforts of different biological scientists, working in this field, have also been of great importance and immense benefit to mankind. If these principles are followed one cannot only have the fortune of leading a healthy and happy life but also to prolong youth and to increase the span of life.

When we think of various mechanisms revealed recently, we cannot but think of an All-knowing, Super-scientist, who designed and engineered all these mechanisms millions of years ago when life came into existence.
