About the Book
This book explores and investigates the history and development of Kashmir classical music known as Sufiana Mausiqi, from its inception in the 15th century, till the present times. The book begins with a brief discussion on the historical background of Islam and Sufism in Kashmir and goes on to explore the various fundamental concepts of Sufiana Mausiqi including its historical background, concept of Maqam and Tala, Instruments, Notation, and Gharanas. The chapter on gharanas is an illuminating one as in this chapter the author highlights the existing gharanas of Sufiana Mausiqi with a proper lineage of the artists. The book also highlights the current declining state of Sufiana Mausiqi and its future prospectus. The appendix contains some important interviews of the persons associated with this art form directly or indirectly.

Since there is a dearth of literature available related to the subject, therefore this publication will be of immense use for the researches, students and general public.

About the Author
Born (10.02.1985) in the beautiful Lolab Valley of Jammu and Kashmir, Shabir Ahmad Mir is a disciple of Music Legend Pandit Bhajan Sopori. He had his initial training from Pt. R.K Raina and Prof. Dost Mohammad Khan. He is also learning Vocal music from Dr. Mallika Banerjee.

Shabir has a sound meritorious background. A student of science, history and Music, Shabir obtained B. A (Hons) music from Ramjas College, Delhi University and Bachelor in Tourism studies from IGNOU with first class. He later obtained his masters in Vocal Music from the School of Performing and Visual Arts, IGNOU as a full time regular student.

Shabir is the recipient of University gold Medal, post graduate merit scholarship and prestigious junior fellowship from the Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India. His research papers and articles have found place in reputed journals. He has also participated in national and international seminars and conferences. He has done a project for the ICH division of Central Sangeet Natak Academy New Delhi. Shabir constantly striving towards the preservation and dissemination of the endangered Sufiana Mausiqi in Kashmir. He is currently pursuing his doctorate in music from the School of Performing and Visual Arts, IGNOU.
