About the Author
Deepak Chaudhary was born in Bishahariya VDC, Saptari district in eastern Nepal. A 'Senior Surveyor' by profession (in engineering field), he has been to almost all parts of the country in course of his field visits, thus gaining invaluable experiences By participating in various social gatherings and observing their rituals and customs, he was able collect a lot of informations which resulted in the publication of his first book, Nepal's Madheshi Society (in Nepali), in 2008.

He has completed his Master's degree in Sociology. Presently, he is doing his Master's in Rural Development. Besides, he has contributed a number of articles in the National dailies and journals and has played an active role in the EIA/IEE study of development projects.

This book in an upgraded version of this earlier work, now in English, which focuses primarily on Tarai/Madhesh's socio-cultural, economic and political aspects. It tries to trace the origins of the many peoples that inhabit the southern belt of Nepal, the Tarai.
