Book Description

Foreword

In various specialties of the traditions of Indian Literature, its polyglot aspect has been an important subject for ages. Exchange, at many stages, between the main stream of literary creations and different forms of regional languages is very old in the tradition of Indian Literature. The identification of our literature and culture is not limited only up to its written or oral form in our traditions but a good combination in both types of creations is seen in the literature of every leading language. It is why the content of that oral literature has played an important role in the history of Indian Literature.

On the contrary, many languages in India have not found recognition as complete languages yet. We still identify them as dialects only. Many of them are identified as Adivasi dialects. The tribal languages are also included in them. A number of folks still speak these dialects without their scripts. A good deal of literature has orally been composed in these tribal languages for ages in which tales and epics are also hidden in addition to the songs. It is essential for us to have a deep study of the creativity of the folks and their literature to understand completely the nature and traditions of Indian Literature.

Many attempts have already been made to go through such oral literature and to compile it. Certainly, these attempts have enriched the knowledge of eugenics, oral culture and social sciences but the studious readers of India have never found any opportunity to go through the folk literature of these tribes in a systematic series. Paying attention on its need, 'Sahitya Academy' has established a Cell for Indian Tribal Literature and Oral Traditions.
