Book Description

Introduction
The fourth part of the Catalogue of Sanskrit Manuscripts conforms to a statutory layout adopted in the earlier parts, except for the increase in size to provide more space for the additional particulars. To the 10,000 manuscripts listed in Parts I-III, a further 3,330 have been added, bringing the total to the number 13,330.

As in the previous catalogue, the Bhakti material predominates here too, but in a reduced proportion (i. e. from 34% in Pt. III to 25%). The works on Jyotisa and Itihasapurana occupy the second and third place, being nearly 16% and 14% respectively. Sangita, a new subject-heading having seven manuscripts, has been placed after the works on Nitisastra.

The last heading, namely the 'Miscellaneous', includes the manuscripts that could not be included in Parts 1-III due to the lack of distinct specifica- tion of their subject matter.

The number of manuscripts in the Bengali script has decreased to a great extent in this volume, hence a script-wise comparative table has not been given.

The sequence of the dates as given in Appendix (F) follows a chronological order, Among the manuscripts of particular interest are:

VEDIC LITERATURE:

A large number of manuscripts of the vedic Samhitas have been reported for the first time.
