Ethnographic Study of the Kuvi-Kandha

Preface Ethnographic studies on Indian Tribes have remained the major concern of research workers in Cultural Anthropology. Until recently, most of the monographs on the Indian tribes have followed the method of 'Notes and Queries' and have presented their data in the form of narration of customs. These do not often relate to the observable patterns of specific village communities. Anthropological Survey of India has put forward a scheme for ethnographic investigation among some of the unknown tribes of India on the basis of concrete observation on specific village communities. It is expected that these monographs will provide bench-mark data for the study of culture change.

Introduction "THE present ethnographic report is based on the materials collected THE from a section of the Kandha tribe, known as Kuvi-Kandha, in the Koraput District of Orissa during December, 1965 to February, 1966. This group was specially selected as there is no anthropological report on this community. This may partly be due to the difficulties in communication and also because the Kuttia-Kandha section of this tribe who live in a relatively accessible area of Baud-Khondmal, were regarded as representative of original culture of the Kandha.
