Book Description

Foreword

Among the humans, animals have evoked diverse feelings of control, cruelty and compassion. For most of humanity, the Cartesian concept prevails; animals are for humans. On the other hand, some people love and treat animals as their best friends. On the literary side again, this paradox has led to different kinds of writing, ranging from exploitation, adventure and affection. Indeed writing on animals has become a separate and independent genre. Here is a gem of this form of writing by a prolific author, known for her literary virtuosity as also for her deep commitment towards suffering animals. As such, she can rightfully be described as an expert of animal psychology. This also reflects in this novel, where the characters have come live and the gap between humans and animals has just about disappeared.

This is a touching novel, in the first person, narrated by the central character Moti, an elephant. It beautifully explores various facets of an animal interacting with human society. Subtle nuances make these characters almost human, though, their basic identity is never lost. Ms. Christine Townend has numerous books, poetry and paintings to her credit. She believes in the harmonious and humane interaction between humans and animals. Her stories, poems and paintings are sensitive expression of her positive philosophy for and intimate experience with animals.

She believes in reverence for life. Same aspect of compassion, permeating her life, have, in practical terms, led her to run animal shelters in Jaipur and Kalimpong etc. While taking a round in the animal shelter along with her, one has the indelible experience of observing the mutual love, mutely but profoundly expressed, both by her and the animals. Her shelters are epitomes of affection.

Prakrit Bharati Academy has published other story books by the author and they have been received well by readers as well as animal lovers and activists. Prakrit Bharati Academy and Federation of Indian Animal Protection Organisations (FIAPO) are pleased to present this new lucid novel to our readers with the hope that they will not only enjoy the story but also find their empathy for animals enhanced. Our thanks to Ms. Christine Townend as well as all others associated with publication of this book.
