About the Book This Book emerged because the author while studying M.Phil in Karnataka Music found that students and researchers in Karnataka Music did not have any proper Guidelines. Research methods prescribed for subjects in science and literature are neither adequate nor appropriate for research in a melody- based creative art such as Classical Music. There is a unique blend of aesthetic values plus mathematical rigour in Karnataka Music. It attracts those who enjoy calculation (while following Tala) and also those who are just blessed out when they hear their favourite ragas and words about the Divine. The Vidwan (maestro) as well as the Rasika (the lay person in the audience) actively follow the words and enjoy keeping the Tala of the songs. During the December Concert Season - all the concert halls are packed. Karnatak Music is ancient - yet vibrantly alive in today's modern social circles.

Dr. Lalita Ramakrishna is Director of Research at Tattvaloka (Chennai) an English monthly on Indian culture. She has M.phil. (English Lit.) from Central Institute of English, (Hyderabad) and Ph.d in Karnatak Music (Delhi University).
