Book Description

About The Book

The book deals with three landmarks of Samkhya philosophy, the oldest of the Indian philosophical systems. The first, the aphorisms of Pañcaśikha etc. are fragmentary remains of compositions by the sages in the Upaniṣadic era; the second, iśvarakrsna's Sāmkhya-Kārikā, possibly the first Indian philosophical text to gain appreciation abroad; the last one, the author's Sāmkhya-tattvāloka was first published in 1903. Interspersed with these are articles on allied topics and some illustrative appendices.

Foreword

Among the six philosophical systems propounded by the sages of India - Sámkhya, Yoga, Nyaya, -Vaiseșika, Purva Mimämsä (or Mimāṁsā) and Uttara Mimāṁsā (or Vedānta) - Samkhya is the oldest. It is also the first in the world to identify the ultimate goal of all living beings viz. Liberation i.e. liberation from all sorrow for all time to come. That comes from realization of one's real Self-Self-in-itself or Puruşa as stated unequivocally by Katha Upanişad (1.3.11), 'There is nothing beyond Puruşa who is the ultimate goal (of all seekers).

Preface

The present book, fourth in our Samkhya-yoga Texts, combines mainly three important treatises by Samkhya-yogācārya Swami Hariharananda Aranya, our revered Acārya Swamiji.
