Book Description

Foreword
Earthquake have been occuring in Nepal though out history and the big ones at about hundred years interval. Earthquakes do not kill but the structures that fall can be fatal. Infact, we tend to take infamy of the earthquake on the loss of lives and the destructions it has caused.

Earthquakes in the past are mentioned in the chronicles and some hardships caused to the local population. But we do not have the detailed description as the history is about the rulers thorough information about the calamity, aids, and subsequent reconstructions works. Similarly, the report by Archibald Campbell in accessing the nature of the big one of 1833 was very informative.

British officers were generally required to note down everything about the place they were stationed and report to the centre. Political obser vations were classified while scientific reports were published in gazzettes and academic journals.

The earthquake of 1833 was written by Campbell, Esq. Assistant Surgeon, attached to the Residency, Kathmandu. He first reported it on 28th August,2 two days after the quake and a more detailed one followed in 23rd November.3 He further sent another report on December, noting the particulars of the earthquake.
