Preface

This Study is an attempt to fill the gap in one of the aspects of economic history. of medieval Karnataka and the period covered is from 1336 A. D. to 1761 A. D. The award of a fellowship in Humanities by the University of Mysore enabled me to under take this study, for which I feel highly grateful to the University. I am highly indebted to Dr. B. Sheik Ali, Vice-Chancellor, Mangalore University, Mangalore for guiding. me throughout the work. His advice was of immense value to me at every stage in preparing this work. Dr. A.V. Venkata Ratnam, Professor and Head of the Depart ment of History, Manasa Gangotri, Mysore, encouraged me to publish this work under the auspices of the Prasaranga of the University of Mysore. Without his encouragement, this work would not have appeared in print within a short period. I am highly grateful to him. My thanks are due to the Librarian, University of Mysore, Curator, Government Oriental Manuscript Library, Madras, Curator, Madras Record Office, Madras, and Epigraphist, Government Epigraphist Office, Mysore, for having provided me all necessary facilities for research work. I also thank the staff members of the University Press and Sri K. T. Veerappa, Director, Parsaranga for completing the printing work within short period. Smt. G Lakshamma, Lecturer, Department of History, Manasa Gangotri. Mysore, prepared the index and I am highly indebted to her for this help. My wife Smt S. Sreedevi, Lecturer in History, J.S.S. College, Mysore, not only offered her critical evaluation in course of the preparation of this work, but also freed me from domestic problems so as to enable me to fully devote my attention to research. Without her continuous inspiration and co-operation, this work would not have been completed. Hence I am highly indebted to her.
