Book Description

About the Book
The Conference of which this volume is a report was held at the Post-graduate Department of English and the Centre for Commonwealth Literature and Research, University of Mysore, from 21st to 25th September 1981 under the sponsorship of the University Grants Commission and the Commonwealth Foundation. The papers included here show the various aspects of the Colonial and the Neo-Colonial Encounters in Creative Writing in the Commonwealth. The third world and its literatures in English have acquired the status of academic discipline. They are lively, fresh and have grown charmingly but differently out of the main tradition. But the daughter, however beautiful she may be, derives all the charm, grace, even love and hate from the mother. The creative urge-latent in all human beings in small or great measure-finds full expression in the language acquired, it makes for "commonweal" in the commonwealth. The encounters with the language and ideas have given the writers, verbal assurance, originality and diversity. These literatures may be considered the new brooms but they have the same floor space to cope with.
