During a break from an official meeting, while Dr. Gopinath Bag and I sipped tea in a corner of the University auditorium, I mentioned the possibility of translating at least one of his works into English. He was slightly uncomfortable with the idea of translation. When I insisted, he suggested that I should first read Kakre Kan (sound of cock-crowing), one of his most recent volumes of poems. He promised me a copy of the book. After a few days, he came to my room in the Department of English, Sambalpur University, and gave me a copy of his book. The dedication, "To the voices battling for the disadvantaged," caught my attention immediately. As I was reading the poems, I felt compelled to translate them. And thus, the journey started.
