Book Description

About the Book
A story based on oral tradition and carried on from one generation to another, however incredible or flippant it might appear, has an intrinsic value and it often deserves a comparative and in-depth study. My purpose at present is limited - to collect as many stories as possible before they are lost to us.

Preface
A story based on oral tradition and carried on from one generation to another, however incredible or flippant it might appear, has an intrinsic value and it often deserves a comparative and in-depth study. My purpose at present is limited-to collect as many stories as possible before they are lost to us.

I am very much indebted to many people for the stories in this book, some of which has a historical basis too. To Mr. Satya Mohan Joshi, founder of the Nepalese Folklore Society, I owe special thanks for kindly permitting me to use two stories he had collected in the Newar language and to Mr. Madan Sen Bajracharya for a story collected in Bhaktapur. Some of the most interesting stories were told by Mr. Buddha Ratna Shakya and Mr. Bishnu Tyata. A story I had heard in part half a century back was re-told to me by Mr. Harshamuni Shakya, and unexpectedly, but happily, it concerned an ancestor of his. Mr. Gokarna Bahadur alias Sarkiman Kuswar recounted to me six stories from various parts of the hilly region.
