Book Description
Sarasvati Mahal Library is a renowned centre for Art and Culture in Thanjavur. In the library new information is found frequently, as water evolves in the river while digging. Those information’s are published in book form to disseminate the Knowledge to Scholars. Accordingly this book is published with the information got from the library manuscripts, which gives information of History of Sanskrit Literature from A.D.1500 to 1850. Catalogues of this library were prepared in periods as 1.During Maratha period 2. During British Government by Dr. A.C. Burnell 3. After become public library by the Library in 20th century. Now This Library has 27 volumes of catalogues comprising 39216 titles of manuscripts. Dr. P.P. Subramania Sastry (P.P.S.Sastry), a learned Sanskrit scholar, under his leadership nineteen volumes of Descriptive Catalogues was prepared and the remaining 20 to 27 volumes were prepared by this library Pandits.
In the Nineteenth volume, Dr. P.P.S. Sastry gave a brief account of History of Thanjavur Nayaks and Maratha kings, details of poets lived around Thanjavur and evolution of Manuscripts. On the basis of P.P.S.Sastry's work, this book has been compiled, by collecting information from various manuscripts and books. This book gives the life history of shri. Varahappaiyar, a Scholar, Musician and officer in the Rajah Serfoji II and his son Shivaji Raja's period, prepared manuscript Catalogues, Annamakhi, a poet, Dr. A.C. Burnell, a notable Orientalist Dr. P.P.S. Sastry. It also gives brief accounts of poets and scholars with portraits. Among them a poet, member of judicial council of Maratha court with royal dress and Portrait of Varahappayya drawn at the age of 27 with a Telugu note of the Artist Ayyam Perumal are note worthy.
